PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide easy reference of reference cases to a doctor reading and diagnosing an image, and to improve diagnostic accuracy. SOLUTION: A lesion position is detected from a diagnostic image (S2), and a pictorial characteristic amount to all detected lesion positions is extracted (S3). Characteristic amounts of reference images stored in a data base and the characteristic amount of the diagnostic image are collated, and similarities of the reference images to the diagnostic image are calculated (S5). Observations coordinated with the similarity-calculated reference images are referred and a probability for every disease name of the reference images is calculated (S6). The reference images, disease names and their probabilities are displayed in order of the calculated probabilities (S7). By this, the doctor reading and diagnosing the diagnostic image can easily refer to reference images pictorially similar to the diagnostic image, and the diagnostic accuracy can be improved by, for example, referring to the observations coordinated with the reference images.
