PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel cyathane derivative that has an effect of inducing the production of nerve growth factor(NGF) and is useful as an inducer of NGF production. ;SOLUTION: This compound is represented by either one of formulas I-V. The compound is obtained by extracting the fruit bodies of a fungus, Sarcodon scabrosus in Sarcodon Thelephoraceae with a mixture of organic solvents (for example, methanol, ethanol, diethyl ether and acetone), usually for 1-72 hours, heating the extract at 40-45°C under a reduced pressure to evaporate the solvents and collect the extract residue. This extract residue is subjected to a liquid- liquid partitioning extraction using a mixed solvent of water and water-insoluble organic solvents (chloroform, ethyl acetate, hexane, diethyl ether and the like), dispersing the water-insoluble organic solvent layer to evaporate the water- insoluble organic solvent from the water-insoluble organic solvent layer to dryness and finally subjecting the dried solid product to chromatographic fractionation to isolate the objective compound.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
