PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a septic tank in which depuration is carried out by using butyric acid bacteria as a depurative to suppress the emission of a foul odor from the tank and to lower BOD and to provide a depuration method for the septic tank. SOLUTION: A method for adding a depurative containing butyric acid bacteria to a septic tank under such conditions as to allow the butyric acid bacteria to exhibit their functions to the full is provided. In order to grow added butyric acid bacteria to the full in a treatment tank, a butyric acid bacteria bed including butyric acid bacteria is put in the treatment tank. The butyric acid bacteria bed comprises a belt-shaped carrier obtained by impregnating or retaining butyric acid bacteria into or on numerous fibers disposed along a lateral face of a flexible belt-shaped body.
