PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new benzyl ether derivative capable of being used as an antiferroelectric or non-threshold antiferroelectric liquid crystal, to provide a liquid crystal composition containing the same and having high speed of response, and to provide a liquid crystal device having clear contrast and capable of being driven as an active matrix liquid crystal device by utilizing the same. ;SOLUTION: This benzyl ether derivative has a chemical structure expressed by formula [1] (R1 is an alkyl; X1 is -COO-, -Oor single bond; X2 and X3 are each -COO-, -CH2O-or single bond; A1 and A2 are each tetralin ring; m and n are each 0-2; and Q1 and Q2 are each a lower alkyl). The liquid crystal device is obtained by filling a liquid crystal cell with the liquid crystal composition containing the benzyl ether derivative.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
