PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound capable of providing a liquid-crystalline polymer useful as an optical material, a displaying material, a recording material, etc., by polymerization. ;SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R1 is H or methyl; 1 is 0-8; (m) is 0 or 1; rings A to F are each an aromatic, an alicyclic hydrocarbon 6-membered ring or a heterocyclic 6-membered ring; Z1, Z2, Z5 and Z6 are each a direct bond or CH2O etc.; (n), (p), (q), (r), (s) and (t) are each 0 or 1; R2 is H, a 1-8C alkyl, etc.; X1 and X2 are each H, a halogen, etc.; (n+p+q+r+s+l) is 1-3], e.g. a compound of formula II.
