A dielectric barrier discharge lamp 100 has an internal electrode 11 inside a bulb 10, and an external electrode 12 outside the bulb 10. Lamp capacity C0 per inner surface area of the bulb between the internal electrode and external electrode is set to less than 2.8 nF/m 2 . By setting lamp capacity C0 within this range, lamp efficiency ·, which is a value obtained by dividing an output luminous flux of the lamp by an power inputted to the lamp, is remarkably increased.
