PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a proper abstract even when an object document is indeterminate by deciding the importance of each sentence in an integrated document according to a generated noun phrase list and generating the abstract according to a generated ranking list. ;SOLUTION: When an integrated document 208 is generated by an integrated document generation module 207, a natural language process module 200 generates a noun phrase list 203 of the integrated document 208 like generating a noun phrase list 203 of the object document 201. Then a summarizing engine 203 weights the respective noun phrases in the noun phrase list 203 according to the importance in the integrated document 208, decides the importance of each sentence by using the weighting result of the respective noun phrases, and ranks the respective sentences to generate a ranking list 205 wherein the sentences are rearranged. Then document summarization support software selects a number of sentences corresponding to the specification of the inputted quantity of abstract from the top ranking according to the ranking list 205 to generate an abstract.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
