PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus, for the detection of a frequency-modulated continuous wave radar, which reduces the number of required frequency ramps and which removes the ambiguity between a distance and a speed. ;SOLUTION: A radar alternately sends out at least two kinds of parallel and discontinuous frequency-modulated ramps which are deviated slightly by the portion of a frequency change (ΔF). A frequency is changed over to a ramp on one side to a ramp on the other side when a specific period (Tf) is finished. A distance from a detected target is estimated as the function of a phase difference (ϕ) between a received signal [S1(t)] corresponding to the first ramp and a receives signal [S2(t)] corresponding to the second ramp. The speed of the target is obtained on the basis of an ambiguity straight line related to an estimated distance and an estimated speed. A method and an apparatus can be applied as a radar especially for an automobile.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
