Use of films and membranes of chitosan and derivatives thereof in removing pollutants from water contamination increased industrial effluents by heavy metals, and maritime accidents because of oil spill is a growing environmental problem. Metals are not biodegradable and tend to accumulate in living organisms causing diseases.Chitosan is a biopolymer obtained by reaction of desacetilau00e7u00e3o of chitin, which is a macromolecule extracted mainly from the shell of crustaceans. Chitosan has good chelating properties due to the presence of amino and hydroxyl groups, which are able to bind metal ions, forming complex at very low concentrations to the level of ppb.With the recent interest by chitosan as an important natural resources, many studies on porous and dense bodies formed with this material have been performed. The present invention is the use of films and membranes developed in its various compositions in the treatment of water contaminated with oil and its residue.But also on the adsorption of heavy metals from waste water of industrial segments, depending on its composition.
