System for controlling the temperature of a chromatographic column, and method for characterizing an analyte in a chromatographic system having at least one chromatographic column. It is disclosed a thermostat for gas cromatograf was autonomous, remote. The device mechanically separates a reservoir heated or cold of the chromatographic column, when a heating or cooling is not necessary.The column needs a cooling system to obtain initial temperature below the environment. On other occasions, the column need to be heated to relatively high temperatures, on the occasion, the cooling system is preferably disconnected.
