Production of hydrogen sulfide by reacting an educt mixture containing gaseous sulfur and hydrogen in the presence of a solid catalyst, comprises reacting the educt mixture at an absolute pressure of 0.5-10 bar, at a temperature of 300-450[deg] C and an excess sulfur in a reactor (1), where the excess sulfur corresponds to a ratio of excess sulfur to produced hydrogen sulfide of 0.2-3 kg sulfur/kg of manufactured hydrogen sulfide. An independent claim is included for a device for continuously producing hydrogen sulfide, comprising a reactor for reacting the educt mixture and a cooler connected with the reactor for cooling the hydrogen sulfide containing gas stream.
