: A refrigerant lend omprising of about 70 weight percent of a HCFCI23 having a boiling point at atmospheric pressure 27.8 degree C and 30 weight percent of propane having a boiling point at atmospheric pressure about -42 degree C. Their proportions are being chosen such that the resulting refrigerant is less flammable and has a vapor pressure substantially equal to the vapor pressure of dichlorodifluoromethane and R134a over the temperature range of about-I5 degree C. to about 80 degree C with similar boiling point temperature performance. Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and Global Warming Potential (GWP) of the mixture is lower than the ODP and GWP of dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-I2). ODP of the blend is negligible and the GWP value is lower than the RI34. The binary blend can be used as alternate refrigerant for the both CFC;.I2 and HFC-I14a refrigerating systems. A method for producing cooling which comprises condensink the refrigerant- and thereafter evaporating said refrigerant in a heat exchange relationship with a body to be cooled. A method for producing heating which comprises condensing the refrigerant composition in a heat exchange relationship with a body to be heated and thereafter evaporating said refrigerant.
