The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of ethylene- propylene (EPM) and ethylene-propylenediene (EPDM) elastomeric copolymers in suspension of a liquid of a liquid monomer, in the presence of a catalyst essentially consisting of a compound of Vanadium, a cocatalyst consisting of an Aluminium trialkyl, and optionally an activator, characterized in that the Aluminium trialkyl is Aluminium trimethyl and the vanadium compound, is a suspension obtained by mixing, in an atmosphere of ethylene or alpha-olefins: (a) vanadium (III) acetylacetonate; (b) a compounds selected from those having general formula (I) Rsubo/subAIXsubm/sub wherein R is a Csub1/subCsub20/sub alkyl radical, x is a halogen, m + n = 3; producing a prepolymerised catalytic species insoluble in the hydrocarbon reaction environment.
