Provided is a method to obtain an immunotherapeutic agent that contains cell wall fragments from a virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis-complex (MTB-C) strain, including the following steps: culture of the virulent MTB-C strain for a period of three weeks or longer and, then, homogenization of the cell culture in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant selected from the group consisting of alkylphenol ethoxylates and ethoxylated sorbitan esters. Further provided is a pharmaceutical composition containing the agent obtained by the said method.
