The apparatus is for the detection of grounding of a boat and measures the boat speed alterations in different directions and the water depth in which the boat travels. The depth information is obtained from the boat data system, or alternatively from a depth indicator coupled to the grounding detection apparatus. The grounding detection apparatus has either an integrated module which stores positions and the grounding is detected or is obtained in positions from the boat data system, e.g. date, time, speed, etc. are also stored in the grounding detection apparatus when the grounding is detected. A grounding can immediately give rise to an alarm sent to a user via the mobile telephone network. All detected groundings are stored in the detection apparatus memory for read-out later via the mobile telephone network or via any kind of data link between the detection apparatus and a personal computer.
