Rebound movement of the tool (4) following each ram strike is restricted using a first stop (11) provided on the holder (5) for the ram (3) and/or tool which cooperates with a second stop (12) provided on either the ram or tool. Rebound movement of the tool is blocked in a resilient manner using a spring fitting (13) provided on one of the stops. Preventing damage to a tool cooperating with and located underneath a ram for compacting a material in a forming region (9) of a pad (10) in a forming machine involves the use of two stops to prevent the tool rebounding out of the forming region after a ram strike. The first stop is provided on a holder for the ram and/or tool and the second stop is provided on either the ram or tool and designed to come into contact with the first stop when the tool is displaced relative to the holder over a given distance in the rebound direction and before the bottom end of the ram has left the forming region. This blocks further movement of the tool in the rebound direction and the blocking action is achieved in a resilient manner using a spring fitting (13) provided on one of the stops. The ram and tool can move in an axial direction relative to the holder and at least one of the ram and tool can slide axially along a guide (6) in the holder. Independent claims are also included for (a) the forming tool unit and (b) a forming machine containing this unit mounted on a height adjustable holder.
