The method involves bringing fluid and moving through a tapering gap (9) bounded by two opposite wall surfaces (10). The distance or the change of the distance between the opposite wall surfaces is measured by pressure exerted by the material moved through steadily tapering or narrowing gap onto the walls and is used or evaluated as a measurement value for the viscosity of the fluid. An independent claim is also included for a viscometer for determining viscosity of fluids, particularly liquids.
