A method for producing a transgenic cotton plant, said method comprising: a) culturing concomitantly a cotton embryogenic callus cultivated on solid media with Agrobacterium cells, said Agrobacterium cells comprising a DNA fragment of interest, operably linked with at least one edge DNA - T, in the presence of a plant phenolic compound capable of inducing increased expression of a vir in said Agrobacterium cells gene, for a period of time sufficient to generate embryogenic callus comprising a transformed cotton cell; b) regenerating a transgenic cotton plant from said transformed cell.
