A method of assembling a catheter (30) delivery of self-expanding stents, loaded with a stent, comprising the steps of: providing a rod (32) having a distal region (40) and a lumen (33) therethrough, a retractable sheath (34) disposed on said rod and self-expanding tubular stent one (50) being cooperatively dimensioned said stem, said stent and said sheath in order to permit axial receiving said stent between said shaft and said sheath; have some external projections (84; 104; 124; 166) on the shaft distal region for securing a distal tip (38) to said shaft distal region; sliding said stent proximally and axial over said shaft distal region and into said sheath lumen; and securing said distal to said distal region of the inner shaft tip.
