The method involves placing a slab (R) on a table (1) of a splitting machine and positioning the slab in an appropriate place under a chisel (2) of the machine. A pre-split is produced by the impact of the chisel, where the pre-split extends throughout the width of the slab. A compressed air is injected with the choice according to schists in a central part (3) of the pre-split or partly lateral on sides. An independent claim is also included for a slate splitting machine.
