A process for the production of sulfuric acid, which comprises condensing sulfuric acid vapor from a gaseous mixture containing 0.01 to 10% by volume of H2SO4 vapor, calculated at the complete hydration of SO3 in the gas to H2SO4, and 0 to 50% by volume of water vapor, cooling the gas in a sulfuric acid tower, in which a stream containing NH3 is added upstream of the tower, in an amount corresponding to 0.01-100 ppm of NH 3 by volume in the gas stream at the entrance of the tower.
