An engine block has compression and expansion cylinders with a compressionand an expansion piston, respectively, therein. Each piston is connected to acrankshaft. A rotary prechamber tube has two constant volume combustionchambersdefined therein and is positioned within a housing coupled to the engineblock.Induction and expansion ports respectively form passageways communicating thecompression cylinder and the expansion cylinder with the chambers of the tube.Thetube is rotatably supported in the housing and has its axis generallytransverse to thecylinder axes. During operation, the chambers are successively brought intocommunication via the induction port with the compression cylinder, separatedfromcommunication with the compression cylinder, brought into a position toreceive fuelfrom the fuel injector and to initiate combustion, and then brought intocommunicationvia the expansion port with the expansion cylinder to complete combusion.
