In accordance with the invention, a method for interfacing a data processing system (e.g. 12) to a business-to-business integration system (18) uses an event-based triggering techniques to automatically engage in an electronic transaction between different business entities to minimize errors with human intervention in the transactional process. The creation of a transaction is sensed by detecting the occurrence of a triggering event (S12). Reference data is read for the transaction from an application database upon the detecting of the triggering event (S14). An outgoing message is formed from transactional data and the reference data upon the detection of the triggering event (S15).
