Disclosed are a method for representing a map section on a display of a driver information system as well as a driver information system. According to the inventive method, an intersection lying ahead of the vehicle in the direction of travel on a current route of the vehicle is selected so as to be represented on the display, and the scale at which the map section that is to be represented is represented is selected such that the length and/or the width of the respective intersection fills at least a predefined percentage of the height and/or the width of the display. The inventive method is characterized in that the intersection is selected also when no data regarding the direction of travel is output with respect to said intersection during a routing process. The disclosed driver information system comprises a locating device for determining a current position of the vehicle, a display for representing a map, means for selecting an intersection lying ahead of the vehicle in the direction of travel on the route of the vehicle, and means for selecting a map section and determining the scale of the representation of the map. The map selecting means are configured so as to determine the scale of the representation and the map section that is to be represented in such a way that the length and/or the width of a selected intersection fills at least a predefined percentage of the height and/or the width of the display. The inventive driver information system is characterized in that the means for selecting an intersection are configured so as to select an intersection regardless of whether destination data regarding said intersection is to be output or not during a routing process. The invention advantageously makes it easier for a driver to orient himself/herself in a road system.
