A system is provided for controlled delivery of oral transmucosal medications, as shown in Figure 1, as needed (PRN), which includes a drug delivery device having a detection mechanism for patient identification, safety features such as timed lock-out, the ability to be linked to an information network and one or more databases for storing prescription and patient usage information.
