Method for guiding a vehicle driver from a current location of the vehicle to a destination with a navigation system, wherein a store of operating materials required for the operation of the vehicle is calculated, wherein a range of the vehicle is defined from the determined operating material store and from a consumption profile, and wherein the navigation system defines a route starting from the current vehicle location to a destination within the determined range, which allows the operating materials to be refilled, and the navigation system guides the vehicle driver to this destination, characterized in that the consumption profile is determined from the distances traveled and information about refilled quantities of operating materials. Also disclosed is a navigation system for implementing the method. The invention has the advantage that vehicle- and/or driver-dependent consumption profiles and, moreover, the remaining range of the vehicle can be reliably determined without the navigation system having access to the on-board communications network of the vehicle, in particular without access to a fill-level sensor for an operating material storage tank or to a data bus on the vehicle. This is of particular significance in the context of so-called commercial devices.
