A method for producing an activated mercury collector is provided, comprising the following steps: a) Application of mercury onto a substrate surface that contains a precious metal, b) Heating of the surface to 300°C - 1000°C, c) Cooling of the surface to below 100°C, d) Repetition of steps a) to c), if necessary. In addition, an activated mercury collector obtainable according to this method, and a method for the selective determination of mercury species in a liquid medium, are provided.
