Chiral glucosides and their use as chiral dopants for the production of cholesteric liquid crystalline compositions

Chiral glucosides of the type 2,4,7-trioxa-bicyclo(4.4.0)decane compounds are new. Chiral glucosides of the type 2,4,7-trioxa-bicyclo(4.4.0)decane compounds of formula (I) are new (when R3 = R4 = H). An Independent claim is also included for cholesteric liquid crystal compositions comprising a wider range of compounds of formula (I) (when R3 = R4 = as below), optionally in admixture with achiral liquid crystal polymerizable monomers of formula (II). R1 = Z1-Y1-(A1)m-Y2-M1-Y3-(A2)n-Y4-; R2 = H, 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C alkylcarbonyl, aryl, arylcarbonyl or Z2-Y5-(A3)o-Y6-M2-Y7-(A4)p-Y11-; R3 = H, 1-12C alkyl, aryl or OR5; R4 = H, 1-12C alkyl, aryl or OR6; R5, R6 = H, 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C alkylcarbonyl, aryl, arylcarbonyl or Z3-Y8-(A5)q-Y9-M3-Y10-(A6)r-Y12-; A1-A8 = 1-30C spacer group; M1-M4 = mesogenic group; Y1-Y10 and Y13-Y16 = bond, -O-, -S-, -C(=O)-, -C(=O)-O-, -O-C(=O)-, -CH=CH-C(=O)-O-, -O-C(=O)-O-, -C(=O)-N(R)-, -(R)N-C(=O)-, -CH2-O-, -O-CH2-, -CH=N-, -N=CH- or -N=N-; Y11, Y12 = bond, -C(=O)-, -O-C(=O)-, -CH=CH-C(=O)-, -(R)N-C(=O)-, -CH2- or -O-CH2-; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; Z1-Z5 = H, 1-12C alkyl, polymerizable group or a residue containing a polymerizable group; and m-t = 0 or 1.
