The invention relates to a communication system for a building (8), an apartment or for an office located inside a building, or for a divided building complex. The system is based on a central data bus (22) for transmitting data to be transmitted between the terminal units, whereby the data bus does not have any inherent deterministic access control. Each intelligent network termination unit comprises an interface device, which is located between the data bus (22) and the corresponding network termination unit and which is configured in such a manner that an access of the corresponding network termination unit to the central data bus is controlled. The communications network enables an integration of all communications services and building services via the central data bus and is characterized by its versatility, clarity and its cost effectiveness.
