A method for starting and stopping the relay function of a relay station in a wireless communication system, in which both the relay station and the base station can send out the request for starting or stopping the relay function of the relay station, firstly the relay station negotiates with the base station to start or stop the relay function of the relay station, and then the relay station determines to set its operation mode as relay or terminal mode according to the negotiation result. A relay station sets its own operation mode according to the received request message for starting or stopping the relay function. It realizes the remote control to the operation state of the relay station, and at the same time provides the convenience for the user to control the relay station of which the user possesses.
