In order to provide a method and a corresponding device for detecting a pinching situation in a more reliable manner whilst simplifying the construction of said device, the invention discloses a method for monitoring a region A, B, C, D having at least two parts (3, 5, 6, 7, 8) that can be displaced in relation to each other with a risk of pinching, in which the electromagnetic field (16) spans the region A, B, C, D in the form of a curtain, said electromagnetic field being generated by at least one emitter (12) and being party captured by at least one receiver in the form of reflections or backscattering for detecting damping and/or shadow creation.
