Adaptive redundant analog-to-digital conversion device and method for image sensor

The device has a converter (21) receiving voltage signal of a pixel. The converter has a comparator comparing pixel voltage level with thresholds delimiting the voltage range of a sensor. An M bit converter (22) with an adaptation unit converts the voltage signals into number of bits lower than M for a voltage range of pixels that are strongly illuminated or equal to M for a range of pixels which are weakly illuminated. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an image sensor (b) a method of analog-to-digital conversion in an image sensor.
