A method and apparatus for generating an extended Harel Statechart (306,308) for an automated interaction from a declarative interaction specification (300). The declarative interaction specification (300) includes a model (316) of interaction data and a set of controls (320). A set of states (702-708) is generated in the extended Harel Statechart corresponding to the set of controls (320) of the interaction specification (300) and self-transitions, which include actions associated with the state, are generated for each state (702-708). A data model (306) associated with the set of states is also generated in the extended Harel Statechart from the model of interaction data (316). Transitions (330, 332) between states are also generated to correspond to changes in control activation.
