The invention relates to a method for selecting a mode for the "frame" or "image" coding of an image (11) in order to code same using compression format MPEG4. The inventive method comprises the following steps: the determination (44, 46, 48) of the absolute value of the deviation between a light datum representative of a pixel and a light datum representative of a group of pixels (21), containing the pixel in question and two pixels from different lines to the pixel in question; the incrementation (50, 54) of a counter when said absolute value exceeds a first threshold (SA); the repetition (52) of the preceding steps for each pixel of the image; and the selection (56) of the "frame" coding mode when the counter value exceeds a second threshold (SD). The invention also relates to a selection device, a coding method, a transcoding method and a recording medium.
