The filling body, for material and heat exchange, is a sheet (6) cut to given dimensions from a metal strip. Cuts are made in lengths to form strip sections (12-16) and further cuts (23-26) are made which are open at one end (28), forming further strip sections (29-35). The closed strip sections are bent into a curve and the other strips are shaped with their open ends away from each other.
