The ad hoc wireless network (100) is provided with a plurality of wireless apparatuses (31-55). MPR wireless apparatuses (36-40, 42, 44, 46-50) are the only apparatuses that are able to initiate channel allocation. They each calculate a back-off time. The back-off times will be shorter depending on that MPR wireless apparatuses' criticalness in the network. The all wireless apparatuses in the network then allocate channels in response to channel allocation requests. This allows for autonomous distributed allocation of channels without reference to a gateway, and helps hinder the ripple effect.
