A method of preparing a bare, fused silica, capillary for capillary electrophoresis comprises:contacting the internal surface of a bare, fused silica capillary electrophoresis capillary with an acid for protonating the silanol groups on said internal surface prior to filling the bare, fused silica, capillary electrophoresis capillary with a polymer matrix, to form an acid-washed capillary; andfilling the acid-washed capillary with a polymer matrix to form a filled capillary.;Preferably, the acid comprises hydrochloric acid, especially hydrochloric acid having a normality of from 0.01N to 0.5N.
