METHOD OF RELIEVING RESIDUAL STRESS IN A WELDED STRUCTURE

A method of relieving residual stresses in a welded structure (1) having a region of tensile stress (3) adjacent a weld joint (2) and a first region of compressive stress (4) adjacent the region of tensile stress. The method comprises controllably heating, typically induction heating, the first compressive stress region (4) under working conditions such that tensile stress is induced in the first compressive stress region and corresponding compressive stress is thereby induced in the tensile stress region (3) such that tensile stress in the tensile stress region is relieved.
