The invention relates to a method for displaying a status of a program running on a data processing device, wherein in a reserved region (11) of a display surface (10) of a display device of the data processing device a control element (14a to 14d) is displayed, an actuation of the control element (14a to 14d) is detected by an input device of the data processing device, and, upon detection of an actuation of the control element (14a to 14d), a program associated with the control element (14a to 14d) is started and/or a program display of the associated program is shown in a working region (13) of the display surface (10). In order to enable a display of the program status in a simple manner using such a method, the invention proposes that, after actuation of the control element (14a to 14d), a status surface (16a to 16d) indicating at least one status parameter of the associated program is displayed on the control element (14a to 14d). The invention further relates to a data processing device and to a control element.
