One or more stabilization units (15), stabilize the web remaining (4.2), between the initial position (A) and the end position (E) of the cutter unit, seen across the machine direction. Cutter and stabilizer (15) are arranged separately in succession along the machine. The operating width of the stabilizer extends across the entire width of the remaining web, corresponding with the operational width of the cutter between start and end positions. It alternatively extends over the entire web width. The stabilizer operational width is adjustable. At least one cutter is included, its initial position (A) corresponding with the desired width of the transfer- or edge strip (4.1) at the side of the web. A dual cutting arrangement is described. The stabilizer has adjacent, individually-controlled components, disposed across the machine. The stabilizer includes film panels adjustable through an angle in relation to the direction of travel of the web remaining. They are swung by an adjuster unit. A suction unit and suction zone are associated with each film panel. In variant designs, the stabilizer comprises suction rollers, or injectors producing flow. Various controls and adjustments control the application, magnitude and/or direction of the suction and flow. The flow is provided by a fluid jet, the fluid being e.g. water, gas, gas fluid mixture, steam or air. The cutter is a fluid jet. It is alternatively a blade. A unit (25) supports strip transfer. Further mechanical details are provided. The equipment forms part of a papermaking machine with a wet section, drying section and system for controlling web width as described. The cutter is in the wet section or at the start of the drying section, and the stabilizer is in the drying section. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the corresponding method of manufacture.
