In an apparatus in which an endothermic reaction and a reaction of catalytic oxidation take place simultaneously, said reactions being physically separated by a metal wall through which the heat is transmitted, the heat of combustion produced is controlled by modulating the reaction of catalytic combustion through the deposition of layers of catalyst of different thickness and density along the face of the surface of heat exchange of the apparatus facing the reaction of catalytic oxidation.
