The electrodes (134, 136; 238, 240, 242; 738, 740, 742; 830, 832, 836) are provided with electrode surfaces which face the medium when the sensor (110) is implanted and are in contact with the medium across large areas and in a substantially uniform manner either directly or via an analyte-permeable membrane layer (146).
