A method of causing a forced change in rotational position of piston rings, and a two-stroke internal combustion engine of the crosshead type are provided to monitor actual operation of the piston rings. A method of causing a forced change in rotational position of piston rings includes the steps of setting an engine to perform continuous operation with a certain load corresponding to the entire power, operating cylinders with the same load corresponding to 1/6 of the entire load, increasing load of the cylinder at t=0 and reducing load of the cylinder to a level equal to the power causing a variation in the average effective pressure of the cylinders, maintaining the changed load for 4 minutes, and repeating the above steps every hour at predetermined time intervals.
