A hill hold control device using an electric parking brake system of a vehicle and a method of operating the hill hold device are provided to prevent vehicle slip on an inclined road or bumping on a downhill road by an ECU controlling a driving power of a motor depending on signals from an incline sensor on up or down hill roads. An electric parking brake(1) locks or unlocks wheels by moving a equalizer by using the linear movements of a screw rod and a pair of gear interlocked to a helical gear. The pair of gear is rotated by a motor operated by a manipulation of a switch. Parking cables are fixed to the equalizer. An ECU(3) controls a braking driving unit(1a) depending on signals from an incline sensor(2). The braking driving unit is a motor generating the power to operate the electric parking brake. A method of controlling the hill hold device comprises the steps of: the ECU determining the delay time for obtaining the driving power of an engine when the signal from the incline sensor is determined to be a hill road, and computing the speed through PWM(Pulse width modulation) duty control for preventing bumping caused by sudden start when the road is determined to be downhill; the ECU sending a control signal to a motor of the braking driving unit to generate the computed driving power of the motor; the ECU controlling the feedback until the vehicle reaches a normal driving condition by detecting the driving power of the motor; and the ECU cutting of the control signal to the motor when the hill holding control is completed.
