Local time difference from the difference between the previous frame and the next frame in a sequence of frames (temporal local difference) is determined. The local distribution of the time difference is determined. Characteristic values of the distribution are determined. Comparing the characteristic value with a threshold value to obtain an indication of the reliability of the noise estimate time . If the estimated noise variance value is determined unreliable , that is used to discard the variance value indicating a noise level of the current frame, a reliable noise variance value estimated in the previous instead .
