APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR TRANSMITTING GEM FRAME IN OLT OF GIGABIT CAPABLE PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK

A frame transmission device in an OLT(Optical Line Terminal) of a gigabit-capable PON(Passive Optical Network) and a method thereof are provided to easily realize broadcast and multicast without copying packets in an interface between single chips by using a slightly changed frame format, thereby increasing subscribers receivable per system. If frames are in more than certain length, a packet generator(401) generates transformed GEM(GPON Encapsulation Mode) frames including identifiers which distinguish PON links and information indicative of length of the overall frames. A packet manager(402) distributes the transformed GEM frames to each of PON MAC(Medium Access Control) units(403a-403n) by referring to the identifiers, and delivers frames transmitted from the PON MAC units(403a-403n) to the packet generator(401). A PON MAC unit divides the frames into the various GEM frames by referring to information indicative of length of the overall frames of the inputted transformed GEM frames.
