An apparatus and a method for estimating a position of a head in a hard disk drive are provided to accurately trace the head moving on a surface of a ramp when the head is loaded to the disk, and an apparatus and a method for controlling the loading of the head in the hard disk drive are provided to achieve precise speed control of the head. An apparatus for estimating a position of a head comprises a speed calculating part, a current change calculating part, and a position estimating part. The speed calculating part calculates moving speed of the head attached on an actuator by using back electromotive force generated in a voice coil. The current change calculating part calculates the quantity change of current applied to the voice coil motor. The position estimating part estimates a position of the head on a ramp by using the calculated speed information and current change information. An apparatus for controlling the loading of the head in the hard disk drive comprises a speed calculating part, a current change calculating part, a position estimating part, a spindle motor speed detecting part, and a control unit. The spindle motor speed detecting part detects RPM of the spindle motor when the head is loaded from the ramp to the disk. The control unit controls the head speed by using the estimated head position and the RPM of the spindle motor. The loading of the head and the driving of the spindle motor are achieved at the same time.
