TRANSPORTATION FEE CALCULATION SYSTEM WITH SERVICE AREA AND OPERATING METHOD

A system for calculating a transportation fare and a method of operating the system are provided to accurately analyze and calculate the fare of a public transportation means on the basis of a distance unit and improve the operating rate of the system using a positioning service and a short message service of a mobile communication system. A system for calculating a transportation fare includes a mobile terminal(110), a vehicle(120), a transportation server(170,180) and a short message service server(160). The mobile terminal pays a fare using a mobile credit card service, receives GPS(Global Positioning System) information and provides getting-on and getting-off position information to the transportation server. The vehicle transports a passenger from the starting point to the end point of a running section determined by a fare paid by the passenger when the passenger gets on the vehicle and provides GPS information on the moving path of the running section to the transportation server. The transportation server analyzes the GPS information provided by the mobile terminal and the vehicle and controls the short message service server to transmit a short message when the vehicle changes a service area and the mobile terminal gets on and gets off the vehicle. The short message service server transmits a message which informs the mobile terminal of the change of the service area to the mobile terminal.
