A novel nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative having an electron-attracting substituent; and an organic EL (electroluminescence) element comprising organic thin layer(s) of a single layer or plural layers including at least a luminous layer sandwiched between a cathode and an anode. At least one of the organic thin layers contains the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative as a sole component or one component of a mixture, and thereby, an organic EL element having high luminous efficiency and a long life can be realized. ® KIPO & WIPO 2008
