An apparatus for preventing information leakage and a method thereof are provided to make a record medium unable to be read immediately by causing an initializing abnormal state of the record medium and preventing data reading. An information leak prevention apparatus(1) is connected with an HDD(Hard Disk Drive)(2), and comprises a main control unit(11), a user interface(12), an HDD connection unit(13) and a power supply unit(14). The user interface is provided to perform user input as an input/output processing unit, and realized with a power switch, manipulation buttons and a display part. The HDD connection unit performs data communication with the HDD, is connected with an HDD physically by a flat cable. And the power supply unit supplies operation power of the HDD, is connected with the HDD by a power cable. The main control unit controls the information leak prevention apparatus entirely, and comprises a command processing unit(11a) and a format abnormal state creation unit(11b). The command processing unit controls the operation of the HDD by publishing a format command, a reset command, a read command and a write command. The format abnormal state creation unit makes the HDD into the format abnormal state. Concretely, the command processing unit quits a format of the HDD forcibly by publishing the reset command or stopping the power supply.
